The Chemical Institute was assigned to the Scientific Faculty after the Foundation in 1993 of what is now the Otto-von-Guericke-University. In the Years of 1995 and 1997 two new Professors were appointed for the Chairs of Anorganic and Organic Chemistry.
After the Foundation of the Faculty for Process and Systems Engineering in the Year of 1998 the Chemical Institute was assigned to the new Faculty as one of four Institutes. There was a extension of research activities in 1999 and the Chair of Physical Chemistry was filled.
In October 2008 the Chair of Technical Chemistry with a focus on "functionalized materials" was reoccupied.
